Honor the Legacy of Dr. George R. Aiken and his wife, Juanita Aiken, R.N.
How does a farm boy from Ohio, a Presbyterian, end up in Kanab around 1930—one of the most remote corners of the West, populated mostly by Mormons, Navajos, and Paiutes? Why in a Ford Model T, of course, the most popular car for rural settings with dirt roads. There, he and his wife Juanita “Nita” (an RN) formed a medical team that served a vast stretch of southern Utah and northern Arizona. Together they devoted roughly 45 years to the people’s medical needs.
Dr. Aiken traveled long distances, sometimes on horseback, delivering babies, performing surgeries (including tonsillectomies), and caring for patients in their homes or wherever they were needed—often for little or no pay. As he later said, “If you were a doctor, you took care of people whether they had money or not.” His patients became his friends. In 1936, he built Kane County’s first hospital by accepting labor, lumber, land, and food in exchange for his services. A new hospital was dedicated in his honor in 1962.
The Kanab Preservation Foundation (KPF) is building a memorial garden at the new Kane County Hospital Surgical Center to honor Dr. Aiken and his wife Juanita.
